<image:title>Projects - REFUGIA</image:title>
<image:caption>Refugia is a performance of domestic landscape, a disturbed relational field activated (and repaired) by a collective inhabitation of space. Its elements were: -a contextual text, sent to participants in advance, which acted as both a glossary of terms and an entryway to the work; and an introduction to the speculative fiction text Dhalgren (1974) by Samuel R Delany. The keywords explored were: Refugia, The Reserve, The Wild, The False, Landscape, Architecture, Utopia, Wildness, Capitalism, and (Art) Worlding. -the setting of a field of relations between my apartment, the apartment above me and the apartment above that; -a reflection on my closest friend, who passed away at the end of 2015; -textual excerpts from Dhalgren placed throughout the three apartments, described disturbed landscapes; -a series of projections, prints and installations placed throughout the three apartments; -and a collective commitment to attending to, and being present in a domestic landscape healing from disruption.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With Visitations, an in-process and performance exhibition Matthew-Robin Nye, Jacinthe Loranger and Laura Acosta insert their creative processes into FOFA Gallery spaces from July 20th to August 24th 2015, and invite friends. Staged as a durational exhibition unveiling an accumulative process-based collaboration, Visitations questions how the result of the overlay of these artists and participants’ interactions could temporarily function as a society, mapping what could be referred to as “local”. <image:title>Projects - SEROCENE</image:title>
<image:caption>Presented at the MIX NYC Queer Video and Performance Art Festival, NYC, 2014, and the PHENOMANA Performance Art Festival, Montreal, 2016. Dramaturgy and scenography developed in collaboration with Montreal-based artist performerJordan Arseneault, SEROCENE is an interdisciplinary performance using song, costume, monologues and elements of cabaret‐style drag to evoke the personal/mythical/social facts – and the as‐yet unspoken connections – between the performer’s experience with body dysmorphia and contracting HIV, and the relation that this figure, the sero-converted ‘other’, may have to our shifting geological age. The quest for a new self‐image requires a transformation of the world, a creation myth of a borderless hybrid identity and utopic landscape. Variously engaging with the audience along the spectrums of gender expression, SEROCENE employes direct address, looped cello and voice, and interactions with projected visuals to trouble the notion of beauty, explore the paradox of masculinity and its failings vs. the instant gratification of being a drag queen, and empower the play between the beautiful and the grotesque. Serocene asked: How does the Poz body constitute itself within a shifting geological epoch?</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Goodnight Moon: a Rhythm a Tempo; Curatorial statement</image:title>
<image:caption>Installation view of maquette for ‘Goodnight Moon: a Rhythm, a Tempo’ placed within dollhouse, both manufactured by Rob Bird. “The Process of Art is Art/The Tomato Makes You Think About Eating It” Shall art communities designate the limits of what is considered a medium of art? If we say yes, we are shutting the door on a variety of creations, and on the subsequent creations that those creations would inspire. We are also then, arguably, shutting a door on unexplored parts of ourselves. At heart is the question, is art but a fancy, or is it an earnest, unpredeterminable exploration? This was the question on my mind when I invited Matthew Robin Nye to bring his complex, playful, and ethically grounding artistic practice to St. Andrews and to Sunbury Shores. Interdisciplinary to the last, and deeply committed to new ways of making art through the administration of it, Matthew-Robin’s work always troubled the ground on which I walked, while also giving me new ways to navigate the spaces I thought I knew. There is a brutal kindness to his work, a feeling one imagines he exacts the most on his own comings-to-form that his practice embroils him in. I was lucky enough to see and participate in a work of Matthew-Robin’s in 2015 in Montreal. Already his thematics around “queer utopias” were taking shape in a manner that was forcefully historical and yet also slippery in terms of identities and how they attach (or don’t) to bodies. This ranges like a strong breeze through sexual identity to artistic identity (and does not stop there). Nye believes in process as a real force in the world, a thing that can be named and expanded on, supported and called essential. For example, when Matthew came to St. Andrews in May to meet residents and spend time with Rob Bird (as well as lose at bingo), these things were, for him, already being materially encoded in Goodnight Moon. They are active, invisible, yet undeniably real aspects of this show’s comings to form. Nye instrumentalizes administration for artistic means and uses artistic production for administrative ends. This is felt clearly in how Goodnight Moon: a Rhythm, a Tempo draws around it a cavalcade of unlikely artistic co-creators. When Matthew was looking for a local craftsman to collaborate in the construction, I suggested Rob Bird, a local experienced wood worker with a sensitivity and intelligence that, I thought, would pair well with Matthew’s vibrant and thoughtfully excitable approach. The Peskotomuhkati word for such UN-obstruction, for such openness to process, is Panolamson (the wind blows unobstructed). This is the path Matthew-Robin Nye brings me on (and, perhaps, us). A path of non obstruction to art. To face that which is beautiful around us, and to invest resources in the unveiling of art as a real and often raw process within communities. To become consumed with our collective stories (even while they are divergent). It is surprising but true, it is the only way we come together softly. ~Joel Mason</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oliver Husain / Hannah Heilmann Estrous.Life / Architecture by Artists Architecture by Artists is an accumulative exhibition in three parts exploring the points of contact and confluences between people, objects and the spaces they occupy. Interdisciplinary artist Hannah Heilmann (Denmark), filmmaker and installation artist Oliver Husain (Germany/Canada), and performance and dance duo Gerard & Kelly (USA) will create propositions which, through their intricate and diverse points of interaction, hypothesize a hybrid architecture representing the social and structural fabric of the urban environment in some of its pluralities. The works, in concert, present a broad and ephemeral definition of Architecture. The exhibition will encompass architectures composed by the organization of people in space; architectures that co-compose with imperceptible territories; and architectures which are expressed through process and senses, such as smell, ephemera and movement. The word ‘Architecture’ becomes a prompt, an organizational principle, a system, or point of departure. Heilmann will debut Estrous.Life, a work that addresses the ongoing apocalyptic body-landscape through a ‘Pop-Up Soap Shop’; Husain will develop Mondo Pale Grey, a new site-specific video and performance about the potential of ‘failure’ in sculptural objects and video; and Gerard & Kelly will present performative ‘score’ for living. Architecture by Artists is curated by interdisciplinary artist Matthew-Robin Nye (Montréal) through the Curatorial Residency program at 221A. Image courtesy of 221A/Dennis Ha</image:caption>

<image:caption>for Copenhagen Art Week, 2015. Curated by Kristoffer Orum The Green Flash My Winnipeg, the Winnipeg that had been building itself as an ungrounded place-no-place for as long as I could remember, had over the course of seven days rushed into a concrescence of absence and finitude, a still landscape with a rapidly nearing regional airport unfolding on the horizon, by way of directional signposts and the minutes on a car’s clock radio counting towards the one-hour-before check in time of a 7:50 am flight to Toronto. This work was initially presented at the Copenhagen Art week in 2015 as part of Kristoffer Oerum's 'Captive Portal' project. The imagery, In A Flash, was created in collaboration with Marc Wieser</image:caption>
